What this treatment is like
Pregnancy massage is gentle bodywork adapted for expectant mothers from the second trimester onward. The treatment uses safe, supported side-lying positions with cushions, and pressure that respects the changes your body is going through.
It can help with the everyday discomforts of pregnancy: heavy legs, a tired lower back, swollen feet and the general sense of carrying more than usual. Just as importantly, it is time set aside for you: forty minutes to an hour in which someone is looking after you.
Sessions are available from 14 weeks. Please mention your stage of pregnancy and any complications, medical advice or consultant guidance when you book, so the session can be planned safely around your circumstances.
Frequently asked questions
When in pregnancy can I have a massage?
From the second trimester, 14 weeks onward, through to your due date. The first trimester is avoided as a standard precaution.
What position will I lie in?
A supported side-lying position with cushions for bump and knees. This is the safest and most comfortable position in pregnancy, and it can be adjusted whenever you need to move.
Do I need permission from my midwife?
If your pregnancy is straightforward, most practitioners are happy for you to have gentle massage. Please mention massage at your next appointment, and always seek medical advice first if anything is complicated.
